Memorial Day 2017 is in the books (thank you to all of the heroes that have made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom in the USA), so that means summer is here, (well… close by). Although the forecast does not look promising for breaking out a great pair of shorts and a t-shirt anytime soon in South Jersey, I am hoping to formulate ideas in our readers’ minds about how to dress for summer.
First and foremost, if you ask me, any great summer outfit needs to start with a great-looking pair of shoes. I recommend a canvas pair of colorful sneakers or white. These types of shoes can be found just about anywhere, and they are affordable, so you won’t be breaking the bank. Check for them at a thrift store, like Goodwill or Plato’s Closet, which always has a good selection of shoes. Boat shoes or “Sperrys” is another good option that I have seen look great on people. These are also available in most stores, like Target or Walmart at decent prices.
I would say a great pair of shorts are another summer staple. A great fitting, pair is going to look awesome on anyone, and colors are a must in my opinion. I think summer is the time where light colors work the best and it gives anyone that “laid-back, I’m-ready-for-fun-look”. Pinks, whites, light grays, khakis and even yellows work well when paired with a light colored top.
Tops might be the area where one can have the most fun with. Many tank tops are super affordable and many times you can find great styles at stores, such as TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Ross. Whether they flatter one’s body or not, they are always fun for the summer with all of the different designs and light colors. But please wear sunscreen when wearing a tank top because sunburn is dangerous for anyone. T-shirts are also another great summer staple, in my opinion, and as many of us might know, not all t-shirts are created for year-round use. Opt for one that is lightweight and light-colored, like baby blue, pink, peach and a color that I think is the best for almost any outfit, white. Many stores will offer basic colors with no designs, but my recommendation is to go to a mall or outlet that has many stores, so that you can decide which t-shirt works best for you in terms of fit and price.
Another great summertime shirt is a collared shirt. Polos (golf or tennis shirt) and short or long-sleeve button-downs look great in the summer. One can opt for a basic, light-weight, light colored polo or button-down shirt. In addition, many stores will offer ones with little designs that some people find fun. Pair it with light colored shorts for an awesome “hot-fun-in-the-summertime-look”.
My best advice to someone looking to shop for hot weather clothing is to try things on in stores. Perhaps it’s an inconvenience at times, but do you know what another inconvenience is?
Taking the item(s) back to the store because you decided you don’t like them anymore or they don’t “exactly” fit you. I am somewhat of a stickler on how I want my clothes to fit, so in my opinion, trying clothing items on in-store first is a must.
I hope that everyone finds this helpful and that everyone had a great kick-off to their summer this past weekend, even though the weather wasn’t so great in South Jersey. Just remember that hot sun is coming our way and dressing for style and functionality is possible if you take the time and effort into picking out what works best for you.
