Anx: It’s a part of life?

I never thought my anxiety was a problem until about two weeks ago when I checked myself into a medical facility because I felt like I could be having a stroke. Admittedly, I never took people’s anxiety seriously, “it’s just an excuse”, I told myself, but after my “scary” situation, I now realize the severity of some people’s anxiety.

Most weeks, I work a job five days-a-week and then (currently) I work an internship with a local minor league baseball team. I host a pre-game radio show and I like to meticulously plan out my on-air routine when I get breaks from work, since it’s tough to find time in my day to get many things done. To shorten a long story, I let the stress of trying to get everything done in so little time get to me. This is not good because I experienced what is known as a “panic/anxiety” attack. One thing I learned through this experience is to try and limit your stress when you can. Everything is not going to fall apart because you decided to sit and eat lunch for a half hour. I got myself into the thinking that if I didn’t write up a perfect pre-game report it would be the end of the world.

I am by no means saying that some stress is not good because it allows us to learn from mistakes and make adjustments. What’s the definition of insanity? “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome”. I think it’s only natural that we are our own harshest critics, but we shouldn’t beat ourselves up so much that it causes  us to take ill.

The bottom line: Stress is a part of life. Anxiety is something that many have to deal with, so everyone who falls into this camp just has to do what they can to limit their stress. Take a break from work, just relax for (even) five minutes. Most importantly, when you do something good, take that moment home with you. Maybe it was a rough day at the office, but I’m sure you did something “good” throughout the day. “Hang your hat on that”. Positive thinking is the only way to move forward. “I might have messed up earlier, I made a mistake, but I can always make up for it”. I hope some of you have found some solace in knowing that you are not the only one who suffers from some kind of anxiety. We can’t let it run our lives. The worst that can happen is that we fail, and our failures often make us better people. Just something to think about as you go through your busy week.

Great looks for the summer worthy of a doubletake

Memorial Day 2017 is in the books (thank you to all of the heroes that have made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom in the USA), so that means summer is here, (well… close by). Although the forecast does not look promising for breaking out a great pair of shorts and a t-shirt anytime soon in South Jersey, I am hoping to formulate ideas in our readers’ minds about how to dress for summer.

Many colleges and universities are two weeks, or so, away from final exams. This can be the most stressful time for a student, especially one who might be completing 12-15 credit hours per semester. Not to mention, they could be working a part-time job or interning at some establishment.

Coming Out Of Your Comfort Zone: The Struggle is Real

As the title suggests, coming out of one’s comfort zone is perhaps one of the most nerve-racking things he or she can do. However, it does not have to be this way.

For self-disclosure, I am not the most social person. Many times I shy away from anything that I feel “forces” me to be around people, but since I am going to be in the communications world, I understand that I have to break out of my shyness and become a great communicator. You can take baby steps to combat the “shyness routine”, such as talking to someone at school or work that you might not normally communicate with. Broadening our horizons is the best thing that we can do because it is always an advantage for you to receive different perspectives. Continue reading

Spring: Break-Away From the Norm

Spring break is upon the campus of Rowan University-note much of the inactivity around campus- but there is plenty to do in New Jersey or wherever your home is if you cannot afford to go down to Florida or climb aboard a pleasure cruise.

Unfortunately, for some people, snow appears to be in the forecast this week. However, the snow can work to your advantage. So long as you are not in the workforce, the snow might keep you indoors, meaning that you can get ahead of your peers by studying. I know it does not sound glamorous, but what else do you have to do? This is a great opportunity if you were not satisfied with your classroom performance in the first half of the semester. If studying and getting ahead is not “your thing”, you can go outside and have a snowball fight, just like you used to when you were a child. Having a snowball fight or even playing a football game in the elements is always fun, no matter your age.
